On top of a mountain w/ Daniel Ruiz

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016

Daniel Ruiz is super talented Vancouver artist and a Ponderosa favourite. Kia and I had the fortunate opportunity of crossing paths with him at the very first Ponderosa in 2013. We instantly loved his charisma and his passion for music. Above is a photo of Daniel in the hills above the Ponderosa festival site in that inaugural year. And below is Daniel’s story.

It was August 2013, and after a whole week at the Peak Performance Project bootcamp, I found my self heading to the first ever Ponderosa Arts & Music Festival to play with BESTiE and Synthcake, not knowing how life changing this experience would be.

I remember being one of the first artists to arrive and setup my tent in the artist camping area. Right away new people starting coming by to say hello. I first met Mark Mills. We started talking about music and jammed with his mini Casio keyboard – we bonded instantly. This was a perfect example of how everyone felt at the festival. Bands that knew about each other but had never met, finally got the chance to hang out and enjoy each others sets with an indescribable vibe that translated throughout the entire festival, making it a great time to bond with these new friends.

That weekend I also met LIO and Mark Petersen. They asked me to join them for their set after they saw me perform with BESTiE and Synthcake – we had a blast! And then I met Ernesto, Pablo and Garzita from Tropidelica. I was ecstatic when I found out they were going to spin Cumbia (native music from my home country Colombia), along with songs from the orchestra my grandfather used to sing in! A few months post-Ponderosa, I ended up joining Tropidelica as their live percussionist!

I formed so many fond memories that weekend with friends from Bend Sinister, Fields of Green, Facts, HUMANS, and many others. Ponderosa truly ignited great friendships that have lasted to this date.

I honestly cannot wait for this year’s festival, as I’ll be performing with our new project, Leisure Club, on Saturday, as well as with La Grooveolucion on Sunday!

Hope to see you there to make new unforgettable memories and friendships!

You can also catch us and Daniel at Sled Island in Calgary June 25. He will be jamming at the Ponderosa Showcase at Broken City with the band Jo Passed. See ya there!
